Abstract:

This study examines the impact of extreme heat on corporate labor cost stickiness using data from 3,243 Chinese listed non-financial firms spanning 2007 to 2020. The results reveal a significant positive relationship between extreme heat and labor cost stickiness, validated through a series of robustness checks and methods to address endogeneity concerns. Moreover, the study explores mechanisms including labor, corporate, government, and industry responses, revealing asymmetries in labor cost stickiness across different firm types and regions. Finally, it highlights that corporate digitization can mitigate the impact of extreme heat on labor cost stickiness.
